On March 23, 1943, Helmut Ruska received his habilitation-diploma at the Medical Faculty of the FriedrichWilhelm-University in Berlin. Questions concerning the ultimate nature of viruses and the size of the infectious unit remained matters of controversial discussion. In 1945, comparing the morphology of another Salmonella phage with its size determined by ultraﬁltration, Ruska deduced the principles of virus assembly from virus structural subunits (Ruska, H. & Ruska-Menze 1948). To deﬁne the ultimate nature and the size of the infectious unit, Helmut Ruska (1948) experimentally correlated different phage suspensions with lytic infectivity titers and the size and morphology of the phages.
