Roy Riegels was in the perfect position to recover the fumble. When Roy saw the ball bouncing free he bent at his waist and scooped it up with both hands. Although he was accustomed to handling the ball while playing center, as a lineman Roy never had the opportunity to run with it. Yet all of a sudden the ball was in his hands. Without breaking stride he turned upfield. Three quick strides took him past the pile where Thomason now lay sprawled on the ground. Then Roy saw a wall of Georgia Tech players racing his way.

It certainly wasn’t the most serious thing in the world. I regretted doing it, even as you do, but you’ll get over it. . Let’s get back together in four–five years . . and we’ll have a good laugh together.
