Chicago’s coaches originally put Urlacher at strongside (known as the “Sam”) linebacker. They believed that he would pick up that position more quickly than middle linebacker and be able to contribute to the team immediately. Although Urlacher was used to playing a variety of positions, he struggled at training camp and during exhibition games. Urlacher himself admitted, “I was the worst Sam linebacker ever. ” He made mental mistakes and was caught out of position. “For the most part, I’m lost,” he said.

Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens was the best example of this new type of middle linebacker. Lewis won NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 and 2003 and was the MVP of Super Bowl XXXV. As of 2011, most NFL teams have gone back to playing a base 4-3 defense, often with massive defensive tackles to protect the middle linebacker from increasingly large offensive linemen. For example, the Bears shielded Urlacher in 2001 with a pair of huge defensive tackles—330-pound (150-kilogram) Ted Washington and 49 50 Brian Urlacher 320-pound (145-kilogram) Keith Traylor—who allowed him to roam across the field.

They won their ninth NFL championship in Super Bowl XX, defeating the New England Patriots 46-10. In that game, the Bears set seven Super Bowl records, including most points and largest margin of victory. The next day, an estimated 500,000 people assembled for a ticker-tape parade in downtown Chicago to greet the team. Quarterback Jim McMahon and running back Walter Payton led that great Bears team. Chicago’s strength, however, was its defense; linemen Richard Dent and Dan Hampton and linebacker Mike Singletary all made the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
