Ruth First was fifty-seven years old when a letter bomb sent by the South African police killed her. For more than thirty years, her goal had been to rid her country of the evil called apartheid, a cause that mattered to her above all else. In South Africa, apartheid laws gave whites all the power, although black people made up the majority of the population. Joe and Ruth were white, but they were unlike most South Africans of their race. They believed apartheid was wrong. Ruth was willing to suffer anything, and did, to have the racist system abolished: imprisonment, the loss of normal family life, exile, and finally, death.
