In recent times, we have now witnessed, at the one hand, an elevated curiosity in cross-linguistic info in formal semantic stories, and, nevertheless, an elevated situation for semantic matters in language typology. notwithstanding, merely few reports mix semantic and typological study for a specific semantic area (such because the papers in Bach et al. (1995) on quantification and Smith (1997) on aspect). This book brings jointly formal semanticists with a cross-linguistic viewpoint and/or these engaged on lesser-known languages, and typologists drawn to semantic concept, to debate semanti. The asymmetry of optimality theoretic syntax and semantics. Journal of Semantics 17: 243–262. * Corien Bary Radboud University Nijmegen I defend an aspectual operator approach of the perfective/imperfective distinction against a coercion approach, as, for example, proposed for French by de Swart (1998). I propose an analysis that follows de Swart on many points, but keeps temporal and aspectual contributions separate. I argue that such an analysis has a larger cross-linguistic coverage than one that combines the two in a single operator.
This gives rise to the following questions: what do the interpretations of the imperfective have in common? And what about the Corien Bary interpretations of the perfective? An additional question is: how do the perfective and imperfective interact with the aspectual class of the predicate-argument structure? In this section, I propose an analysis of the perfective/imperfective distinction that can handle the range of interpretations that we observed. This proposal follows de Swart’s (1998) analysis on many points, but at the same time differs from it in some important respects.
