Hannah’s Off the SquareHannah’s Off the Square is a gem among terrible restaurants in Denton, TX. If you live in Denton, you know that finding a decent, non-chain restaurant can be a major challenge. I lived there for two years during grad school, and I had two favorites. And I wouldn’t describe them as “great food.” Last week, I visited my brother, Toby, in Denton and we decided to try something new. I had heard good things about Hannah’s, but considering people up there rave about mediocre (at best!) Mexican food restaurants… I was skeptical.
This casual fine dining restaurant has a quiet lunch atmosphere with tasteful jazz playing overhead. Our waiter was attentive and gave us daily specials with a little extra gusto. Everything sounded tasty! Toby chose an item off the daily specials – tuna sandwich with mango salsa and bean sprouts on a whole-wheat bun. The grouping was a nice balance of sweet, savory, with a tiny crunch. I have to admit, I think the tuna steak was just a little fishy (but, I’m a fish snob). I settled on the fried green tomato sandwich topped with feta cheese, hummus spread, red onion, cucumber, cilantro pesto mayo and roasted red pepper. Paired with fresh fruit and iced tea, I left a happy camper! My sandwich tasted fresh and was a surprising combination – I really dug the cucumbers! Toby even decided he wanted to try to recreate it at home.Nutrition Analysis scale: Tuna Sandwich – Everyday meal (substitute fruit for chips) Fried Green Tomato – Sometimes meal
Next time I’m in Denton, I’ll definitely be stopping by Hannah’s. Maybe next time for dinner! Check out their menus. I hear they cater too!
